Alongside Africa Uganda (AAU) is our sister charity. An independent registered Ugandan NGO, AAU is run by – and employs -Ugandans, and is supported by local organisations, local communities, and the UK charity Alongside Africa (registered no: 1146752).
The AAU team personally know every child, young adult, women’s group and other beneficiary of their programmes, and are committed to a world in which every person has the opportunity to earn a living.
Opportunities, not aid
Recognising the right of marginalised and disadvantaged Ugandan communities to take responsibility for their own development and independence, AAU’s programmes are delivered in a way that ensures dignity and self-respect.
Working in partnership with local authorities, trusted schools and hospitals – including Rugarama Hospital, Victorious Preparatory School, and New Foundation Primary School – AAU focuses on opportunities for individual and personal development, not spending on grand, unsustainable projects.
Though a small NGO, AAU succeeds because:
- Programmes are designed and run by experienced local Ugandan staff that understand the needs of the communities they serve.
- Each community AAU works with is intimately involved in the development and delivery of tailored solutions, ensuring that support works on the ground.
- AAU is supported by the UK charity Alongside Africa, whose team spend as much time as possible in Uganda, developing and mentoring the in-country team.
