How it started
Several years ago a young child from one of the schools that we work with died from diarrhea, a condition that can be easy to treat. This child died because the community he lived in, which is very remote, had no money to hire transport to get the child to a clinic. For a the sake of one or two pounds or dollars a child was lost.
We determined that this would not happen again, and so we made arrangements with local medical facilities that children in our care and others in the same communities could receive free treatment, including transport if necessary. At the end of each month we pay the bills that have been incurred.
This programme has now saved many lives and provided medical care for very many children. It does, of course, cost money, which is a commodity that we, as a small charity, are very short of.
Ralph Titterton devoted his life to caring for others in the medical profession. He passed on suddenly in 2022 and is sadly missed by all those who knew him. So many people today owe their life to his skills and dedication to his work.
Thanks to a very generous offer from his partner our medical fund has been renamed Ralph’s Emergency Medical Fund and the future of this important programme is now assured. It is a fitting testimony to the memory of a very special man.
Below is a list, which will continue to grow, of the medical interventions that we have been able to make this year through Ralph’s Emergency Medical Fund.
