“The presidential directive to lock down the country to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, whilst helpful for cubing the spread of the disease, has impacted negatively on young girls. A lot of them have become victims of defilement and teenage pregnancy. ”
The Problem
Following nearly two years of enforced school closures many young ladies between the ages of 14 and 18 are now too old to continue their education. Many have been forced into pregnancy through abuse or hopelessness; many have been traumatised through illegal terminations.
Alongside Africa already supports young ladies in this situation through its’ Amasiko Halfway House training centre, which opened in January 2018. Here we provide training in tailoring and hairdressing, as well as life skills training in subjects such as literacy, numeracy, human rights and sexual health. On graduation the girls are assisted to get a job or start their own small business.
Our Response
To meet the increase in demand for the services provided at the Amasiko Halfway House we would like to expand our capacity by erecting a new building. This new facility will enable us to increase our residential capacity from 16 to 24 young ladies. It will also provide capacity to extend our training to members of the local community and to provide improved accommodation for our dedicated live-in centre manager, who is a trained social worker.

The cost of building the new facility is £28,000. This is an ambitious target for a small charity, and we cannot raise this without your help.
You can help us by:
- Fundraising: Organise a fundraising event in your local community – quiz nights, AmDram shows or talks at your local church or social group.
- Make a Donation: Whether you can give £1,000 or £1, every bit little helps us towards our goal of building Halfway House 2
