Five weeks ago we came out to Kabale as a group of four – two Trustees and two volunteers. Mike, our Treasurer, sadly had to leave after two weeks, followed seven days later by Kerri, whose first trip to Africa will never be forgotten.
Yesterday we said goodbye to Judith, an intern who had been at Amasiko for two months and who became not only a firm friend of everyone, but a right hand help to the Amasiko General Manager, Peace. At the same time we said goodbye to Ellese, who had come out from the UK to volunteer with Alongside Africa Uganda for five weeks.
Ellese first came to Uganda two years ago when she was part of the Amasiko opening team. That experience changed Ellese’s views on what she wanted to do in life, and we were delighted to welcome her back this year after a two year university course which she passed with honours. In the five weeks that Ellese was here she became an invaluable asset to the Amasiko team as well as the Alongside Africa Uganda management team. She worked hard, got involved, was professional throughout, objective, fun and, at times, emotional. She was the perfect volunteer and her family and friends should be very proud of her.
Ellese has kindly agreed to help us coordinate and manage the new volunteer programme and we can’t think of anyone more qualified for the role.
