Devastating news has reached us today from our team in Uganda. One of the children on the Amasiko street children program has been orphaned after the passing of his mother. He has nowhere to go, no known living relative able to take care of him and has nobody to support him.
Earlier this year Peter (not his real name) 10-year-old, registered at the street children program with Alongside Africa Uganda. He has since been a regular attendee of the Amasiko Drop-in Centre. A secure center where street children have access to a free hot meal, basic health care, washing facilities and the counselling of our support staff.
Peter is a street child and became so due to his mother’s ill health. He took to the street so he could find something to eat by begging and scavenging from garbage places for survival.
Our support staff have been actively involved in supporting him. During one of our routine visit to Peter maternal home just two months ago, his mother Hildah, was very sick and on the verge of death. Unfortunately, this week, death took away the only parent Peter had left, making him an orphan.
His father died years ago when he was still a toddler, leaving them in a rented room and unable to make ends meet. This misfortune and adverse poverty contributed to the sessions of psychosis that his mother endured and the subsequent ill health that leads to her death.
His maternal grandfather has died and his grandmother is in poor ill health. He currently has no foster parent and no knowledge of his father’s family members that may look after him.
At a tender age of 10, Peter has endured so much suffering due to poverty. No child should have to go through hardship and suffering such as this.
We are appealing for a good Samaritan that can sponsor Peter through his primary education, which will also ensure that he has a safe place to live in boarding accommodation and will receive regular meals and clothing.
Can you find a place in your heart to sponsor Peter education and give hope to a hopeless, homeless and orphan child?
This is an urgent appeal on behalf of Peter for sponsorship through the Alongside Africa, Give a Child a Chance program. We are in partnership with a great school in Uganda where our existing sponsored children attends. There, he will find a place for good and quality education. He will also be in the company of other children in a safe and caring environments.
