Alice (not her real name) aged 13 years old was born to the late Kanyankole and Kyomuhendo Alice of Kagarama, Kabale district in Uganda. She dropped out of school in primary five after her father’s death.
Alice reported to the Amasiko Street Children programme, sickly and malnourished. Her hair was falling out, she had stunted growth and unhealthy skin. This is because at home she had no food to eat and was living in constant starvation. Alice was vulnerable and at serious risk of becoming a teenage mother.
Since she arrived at the Amasiko Street Children Center, she was helped to regain her health and her nutrition was targeted. She also received counseling from our support staff and her extended family was traced. Her aunt who could not take the role of a parent over her, helped place her with her friend who took the role of her foster carer and she soon started to recover. But Alice had to walk for 5 miles from her foster carer’s home to the Amasiko Drop in Centre for her daily meals and walked the same distance back home again from Monday to Friday.
Four weeks ago, after learning that a sponsor has given her a chance to go back to school through our sponsorship programme, Alice went to share the good news with her foster carer, Orishaba Vasitina.
Excitedly, Alice led the group to her foster carer’s home. On reaching her home we waited for her foster carer who had gone to work on other people’s land to earn a living and money for some food. With a smile she welcomed us and invited us to enter her house.
Alice said her goodbyes to her foster carer and her neighbours. She has now started school again, thanks to her new sponsor, may God bless you abundantly.
